Styling and Writing Intern: the term in itself demanded a whole lot from me. It started when I moved from Bournemouth, UK to Mumbai, India within the span of a week.
On my first day at Elle magazine, I was inducted by the previous intern about basics such as what my job profile is and all the paper work related to it. Having worked with Femina magazine before, I was not completely unaware of the workings of the fashion team at a publication house. But the picture here at Ogaan publications pvt. ltd. is much larger.
I started the day by sending out an introductory email to both the Mumbai and Delhi team. The next day I met with Rahul Vijay, the fashion editor and my employer. After a quick chat, we started working on Elle Graduate Awards that were to happen the same weekend. The schedule was hectic:
27th March- Graduates shoot ideation, sourcing outfits for celebrity attendees
28th March- Final guest list and model chart
29th March- Model fittings and show lineup preparation
30th March- Awards show
31st March- Photoshoot of the participant designers.
I faced the week’s biggest challenge on the day of the Graduates show. The team wanted a bunch of luxurious flowers and a few bottles of nude nail paint 3 hours before the show. Having travelled on my motorbike to the event location, I quickly took to the 32 degrees burning roads to look for the same. The task truly tested my knowledge of my own city and decision making ability under time constrains. At the after party, I was able to network with a lot of designers and models.
Next day at the designer’s shoot set, I was made in-charge of expenses for food, water and other bits. I managed to budget the on-set spendings very efficiently and accurately submit the accounts for the same to the concerned team.
NOTE TO SELF: There is no weekend when you work in fashion. You live and breathe your work and consistently remember to appreciate this opportunity you have been given to grow.
