As an intern, you often are given tasks that help other team members finish their tasks quicker. After all a fashion team is not all about styling and sourcing, they also work on trend pages and features every month. This week I was asked to research for images for the trend pages.
Well at the same time I was working on my hotel article that was to be edited by the features editor. And delivering the best of my courier tracking and communication skills to the fashion stylist. “Multitasking is heavily demanded in the media industry with every job expected to be done YESTERDAY, not even now” explained a close friend- Argho Mukherji who leads the PR team of Jeep India. Having worked on all these bits for long hours, I was about the finish the day at 7 pm when the stylist asked me to check on setting the rack for selections of the weekend digital cover shoot. After a long week of working more than 10 hours a day from Monday to Thursday, I arrived home only at midnight with no physical or mental state to go back again the next day. At this point I had to stop or I would begin to detest my job.
I informed my editor about my need for a leave the next day and he politely took my health into consideration. However the stylist questioned me on my willingness and dedication to work by clearly ignoring my health issues and asked me not to attend the digital cover shoot if I wasn’t going to be involved in the entire process of the shoot. The point of mentioning this here is not to complain but to make a note of what kinds of behaviour you will come across and how you should deal with it. I used the weekend to rest and visit the doctors to get my tests done.
NOTE TO SELF: Learn to say NO! Everything needs to be done right now and right away. Understand your own pattern of delivering the best of your skills, learn, evolve and grow. Do not go on working under the pressure of your title at the company because your contribution matters.
